An Innovative Bunion Removal Option Now Available in Austin
September 21, 2022 — Dr. Jonathan Smedley of Precision Podiatry recently contributed an article to the Austin Patch in which he discussed what bunion deformities are, the stigma surrounding the condition, and the available options for treating them including an approach called Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™.
“There is a stigma surrounding the term and many patients are often embarrassed to talk about the condition with their friends, family and even their physicians,” said Dr. Smedley. “But bunions are a serious condition that can be difficult to treat without the right methods.”
Fortunately, there are treatment options available. In the past, the most common surgical approach was the 2D osteotomy, which involves shaving down the protruding bone on the side of the big toe and shifting the bones over.
“One of my passions as a podiatrist is looking for new ways to treat difficult problems,” explained Dr. Smedley.
When Dr. Smedley heard about a new treatment approach called Lapiplasty®, he was immediately interested in learning more. This procedure addresses the root cause of the deformity by returning the bones in the foot to their correct alignment and securing them in their proper positions using a system of patented titanium plates . With Lapiplasty®, patients are typically back on their feet using a surgical boot within days of the procedure and are generally able to return to their usual lifestyles and physical activities within about four months , .
“It has been rewarding to use this method to treat patients and continue to speak out about the impact of bunions and the relative ease of removal while also working to erase the stigma surrounding the condition,” expressed Dr. Smedley.
As with any medical treatment, individual results vary. There are potential risks and recovery takes time. For further information on the recovery process, follow this link to Recovery Information.
